Headline: Family of blind activist detained

    Byline: Josephine Ma in Beijing

About a dozen men raided the home of a Beijing law lecturer last night and took away the mother, elder brother and three-year-old son of blind activist Chen Guangcheng, who was detained after drawing international attention to the coercive abortion measures in a Shandong village.

Lawyers and campaigners for the release of Mr Chen said they believed the men were police from the city of Linyi .

The men raided the home of law lecturer Teng Biao at 8pm and took away the trio, who arrived in Beijing on Saturday to attend a press conference that had been scheduled for yesterday.

Lawyer Xu Zhiyong said Dr Teng suffered minor injuries when the men pushed him aside as they grabbed Mr Chen's 70-year-old mother, elder brother Chen Guangfu and the boy. "Police should identify themselves and show documents when they arrest people. This is kidnapping," Dr Xu said.

The press conference, which had been intended to draw media attention to the dire situation of the 35-year-old activist, was cancelled after Dr Xu and Dr Teng were summoned by the universities they work for and warned not to become involved in Mr Chen's case.

Dr Xu said Dr Teng's movements were restricted and he was only allowed to go to the university yesterday.

Activist Hu Jia and his wife, Zeng Jinyan, who were also helping organise the press conference, were stopped by a dozen plain-clothes police when they left home yesterday morning.

"The police told me explicitly that it would be impossible for me to go anywhere today because of the press conference," Mr Hu said.

Dr Xu said he was planning to visit Mr Chen at the detention centre in Shandong with another lawyer.

Mr Chen has been under arrest since August, when his exposure of the coercive abortion measures imposed on farmers by village officials hit international press headlines.

The self-taught "barefoot lawyer" was formally detained by police on June 11 on charges of "intending to damage public property and inciting people to disrupt transport", implying he would be formally charged soon.
