VITAL VOICES’ WELCOMES TO CHINESE GOVERNMENT DECISION TO ALLOW DR. GAO TO TRAVEL TO U.S. Statement by Melanne Verveer, Co-founder and Chair We are elated by the news that Dr. Gao will be coming to Washington to receive the 2007 Vital Voices Global Women’s Leadership Award for Human Rights. In a phone conversation on Friday with Vital Voices’ Human Rights Program Director, Wenchi Yu Perkins, Dr Gao expressed her joy and desire to accept the award in person, and we are pleased that it now appears her wish will be realized. Dr. Gao has made great contributions to combating HIV/AIDS in China. She is truly a “vital voice” – a world-recognized leader on behalf of an issue critically important to China and the world community. We look forward to welcoming Dr. Gao to Washington next month.
