US Representative Mike Gallagher Receives Plaque of Recognition from the Congress on China's Future and the 5th "Human Rights and Freedom Defender" Prize of the Wei Jingsheng Foundation
On April 16, 2024, WEI Jingsheng, LIU Dimon, HUANG Ciping, and LI Hengqing visited and met with US Representative Michael J. Gallagher in his office. They praised Rep. Gallagher's support of Chinese democracy and human rights, especially his outstanding leadership as the Chairman of the Select Committee on the Strategic Competition Between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party.
They presented a Champion of Human Rights and Democracy in China plaque along with a Declaration of Appreciation to Chairman Gallagher, for all his work and contribution to the American and Chinese people, on behalf of the Congress on China's Future, which included Wei Jingsheng, Wang Dan, Wang Juntao, Liu Dimon, Huang Ciping, Li Hengqing, etc.
Wei Jingsheng and Huang Ciping also presented to Chairman Gallagher the 5th "Human Rights and Freedom Defender" Prize of the Wei Jingsheng Foundation. Since 2014, this prize had been given to Rep. Frank Wolf, Leader Nancy Pelosi and Mr. Robert Bernstein, Rep. Chris Smith, and Rep. Marcy Kaptur, in ceremonies held jointly by the European Parliament Liaison Office with the US Congress and other human rights and democracy organizations.
Others also attended the meeting, include Caroline Vik, Senior Advisor for the Select Committee.
The following is the Declaration of Appreciation to Congressman Michael J. Gallagher.
__ __ __
Declaration of Appreciation
We, the undersigned individuals and members of organizations supportive of democracy and human rights, wish to bid farewell to a man we have come to consider a true friend by issuing the following declaration:
Mike Gallagher,
Representing the 8th Congressional District
Of the State of Wisconsin
Has served with honor and distinction in several roles in the United States Congress, but most importantly, from our perspective as:
Chairman of the Select Committee on the Strategic Competition Between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party
Many of us honoring Chairman Mike Gallagher have spent much of our lives fighting for freedom and democracy. Some of us have spent years in prison for our efforts. We have the experience and perspectives to recognize an effective freedom fighter when we see one.
In a period of increasing tension between the People's Republic of China and the United States, with familiar wolf-warriors voicing bellicose arguments over timeworn disputes, some of us despaired whether the United States would ever get China policy right. Chairman Mike and the Select Committee have come as a breath of fresh air.
Chairman Gallagher has led the Committee in a bipartisan and comprehensive manner, with exemplary energy, moral clarity, and good humor.
* He changed the name to the Select Committee on the CCP, thus dismantling a major theme of the United Front narratives, and focusing necessary attention on the political background of our competitors, rather than their ethnicity or history.
* He held disciplined and focused hearings emphasizing bipartisan support for important bilateral issues at a time when American politics seemed increasingly splintered, with knowledgeable witnesses addressing specific security, economic, commercial and technological problems, and he brought these important issues to public and governmental attention.
* He consistently called out those in the business community who focused on short term financial gains abetting the totalitarian CCP regime.
* He expressed broad and consistent support of human rights and democracy organizations, reinforcing American principles and encouraging those struggling for universal values.
We esteem Chairman Gallagher for his skilled leadership and articulation of critical issues for American and Chinese people, as well for people worldwide.
He will be missed, but we hope his example will be sustained, and that he will never flag in fighting the good fight.
