Fulfill Olympic Promises, Release Human Rights Activists: A Joint Statement by Taiwan's Civil Society
16 January 2008
Right before the year of Olympics in Beijing, Hu Jia (胡佳), a long-time activist in environmental and AIDS issues in China, was arrested and detained by the Chinese government on sedition charges on 27 December 2007.
Hu's request to see his lawyer was declined on the ground that his case "involves national secrets". Hu's wife, Zeng Jinyan (曾金燕) and their one-month old daughter were put under house arrest, with all communication channels to the outside blocked.
Because of our deep concerns on the rights of Mr Hu Jia and his families, and because of our expectation on China's promises to improve human rights within the country made during the selection process of 2008 Olympic host city, we, members of Taiwan's civil society, hereby urge the Chinese government to:
1. Release Hu Jia immediately; end the house arrest and all forms of harassment to Zeng Jinyan; protect all rights granted to Mr and Mrs Hu by the Constitution and relevant criminal laws of the People's Republic of China, and by international human rights treaties.
2. Fulfill its Olympic promises—improve human rights conditions in the country; provide protection to the freedoms of expression, of the press, of religion, of movement and to other fundamental rights of the people.
